Card Counting Strategies
Common card counting strategies along with Card Values,Betting Correlation, Playing Efficiency, Insurance Correlationand Ease of Use are listed here. These terms are defined atthe bottom of the page and are used to estimate the effectivenessof a card counting system. Additional info and sources canbe found below the table. High Opt 1 Card Counting This system is the first of two deviations on the high-low system popularized by Lance Humble and Carl Cooper. The primary difference between this strategy and the original is that aces and deuces are treated as 'neutral' cards. Every time a card is layed down on the table, you add its value to maintain what is called a running count. You always want to start counting at the beginning of a shoe, starting with 0. The 4 is a low card. The 8 is worth 0, so the count stays at plus 1. The 5 is worth 1, so the count goes to plus 2. Another low card 3 brings us to plus 3. Basic strategy does not overcome the casino's house edge until we add card counting to the mix. Card CountingDefinitions
Card counting techniques include the following measures:- Playing Efficiency - PE indicateshow well a card counting system handles changes in playingstrategy. Playing efficiency is particularly important inhand-held games (one or two decks.)
- Betting Correlation -BC is defined as the correlation between card point valuesand the effect of removal of cards. It is used to predicthow well a counting system predicts good betting situationsand can approach 1.00 (100% correlation.) BC is particularlyimportant in shoe games (six or eight decks.)
- Insurance Correlation- IC is defined as the correlation between card pointvalues and the value of cards in Insurance situation. Apoint value of -9 for tens and +4 for all other cards wouldbe perfect for predicting if an Insurance bet should beplaced.
- Level - The level of astrategy refers to the number of different values assignedto cards. Level 2 and 3 counting strategies are more efficient,but quite a bit more difficult for most people. Level 3,4 & 5 strategies also exist. But this is overkill.
